Oerlikon Barmag Introduces Artificial Turf, Monofilament Machinery

Germany-based Oerlikon Barmag, the man-made fiber spinning systems and texturing machine supplier
business unit of Oerlikon Textile GmbH & Co. KG, has engineered several new monofilament
manufacturing products.

The company reports it has developed a small-batch, state-of-the-art compact spinning system
with an output of between 100 and 150 kilograms per hour. The machine, with approximately half of
the capacity of a normal compact spinning system, allows a manufacturer to economically and
efficiently produce low, low density polyethylene (PE), high-density PE and polypropylene (PP)
yarns for artificial turf applications. A three-level hot-air oven offers one-step drawing and
two-step thermosetting of the filaments, resulting in a system that requires less space than a
traditional compact spinning machine.

In addition, Oerlikon Barmag reports its new MFE 3 monofilament system produces PP
multifilament yarns with tenacities in the 10-grams-per-denier (g/den) range, which is greater than
tenacities found currently in similar products. Typical PP and polyester multifilament yarns have a
tenacity of around 8.5 g/den. Items such as ropes and industrial fabrics produced from filaments
made using the MFE 3 system are light, but offer consistent tear resistance according to the
company.
