United States-based fluoropolymer resin and specialty chemicals company AGC Chemicals Americas Inc.
— a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan-based Asahi Glass Company — has released AsahiGuard AG-E550D,
a perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)-free water- and oil-repellent finish for technical textiles and
nonwovens.
The finish is based on a patented short-chain C6 fluorinated polymer technology that offers a
reduced environmental impact compared to long-chain C8 chemistries. “AGC is the first company to
convert its entire product line to the short-chain C6 technology, and we’ve done it three years
ahead of the U.S. EPA goal in 2015,” said Bill Fiedler, business manager, AGC Chemicals Americas.
According to the company, AsahiGuard AG-E550D is nonflammable, and is compatible with
residual dyes and auxiliaries from preceding production steps. The finish also is durable and can
withstand multiple washings.
AGC reports the finish is suitable for outerwear and workwear fabrics, as well as technical
textiles incorporated into shoes, uniforms, patio umbrellas, furniture, tents, sleeping bags,
tablecloths, awnings and vehicle covers. It can be used on products used in medical, industrial and
consumer settings.
