Ciba Opens R&D Center In China
“I am very pleased to be here to open our newest global research facility and our first center of this type in China. It is a significant step in the implementation of our strategy to strengthen our presence in China,” said Armin Meyer, chairman and CEO of Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Switzerland, at the opening ceremony of the company’s research and development center in Shanghai. The center represents an investment of about $20 million by Ciba.Ciba says 100 scientists will work at the 6,000-square-meter facility, whose mission is to combine expertise in organic synthesis, physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, photochemistry, and analytical chemistry with application and formulation sciences to create new products and solutions for customers in Asia and around the world. The Shanghai R&D center is part of Ciba’s global research network, which has more than 1,600 employees at 24 research sites around the globe.

Ciba’s recently opened R&D center in Shanghai will employ 100 scientists, who will create new products for customers in Asia and around the world.Industries that the R&D center will be serving include: industrial, decoration and automotive coatings; plastics; imaging inks and graphics; polymer and lubricant industries; textile industries; personal care; home and fabric care; water treatments ranging from municipal and industrial applications to micro-encapsulation and soil additives; and the paper-making industry.Ciba already has three trading companies, six branch offices and 12 production sites in China. The company says its business in China has been showing steady double-digit growth over the past few years.
